Ikebukuro is a bit like the owl district, not only for its many cafés dedicated to this bird of prey, but also for this charming shrine nestled in a quiet corner. It dates back to the 16th century and is dedicated to the emperor Jinmu. Its main feature is the owl-shaped statues and good-luck charms. They are said to protect against life's tribulations, as the Japanese name for the bird, "fukurō", can be understood as "without difficulty"(fu meaning "without" and kurō, "difficulty"). It's a pleasant stop, yet not very touristy.
