Gokoku-Ji, a temple of the Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism, is the oldest and largest temple in Tokyo's Edo period. It was built in 1681 and, over the years, new buildings have been added to this impressive complex. These include a belfry dating from 1682 and a two-level pagoda built in 1938. Adjacent to the temple is the Zoshigaya Cemetery. It contains the graves of writer Lafcadio Hearn, who took Japanese nationality at the end of the 19th century, and missionary John McCaleb.
