SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE
Inaugurated in 2019, this 47-storey skyscraper is at the heart of a major urban redevelopment project in the district, in a "neo Shibuya" that is both resolutely forward-looking and rooted in local culture and history. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, who also built the national stadium for the Tokyo Olympics, the tower overlooks the station and the famous crossroads. Inside, a shopping mall rises over the first 14 levels. Its main attraction is its food offering, with numerous cafés and restaurants serving a fusion of culinary traditions. Souvenir stores on the 14th floor showcase Japanese products of contemporary design, and there are nuggets to suit all budgets.
The building's main attraction is Shibuya Sky, the open-air panoramic observatory perched 223 meters above sea level. The view over Tokyo is breathtaking, especially as only a glass railing separates visitors from the void. Visitors can take photos of themselves floating almost above the city, or sit back in hammocks or sofas to enjoy the view or contemplate the sky. Admission may seem a little pricey compared to the Shinjuku City Hall observatory, but the open-air view of the sunset, or of the city's illuminations, is simply enchanting. Not to mention the view of the Shibuya crossroads. From above, the stream of pedestrians seems like a silent wave...
