AKASAKA PALACE
The detached palace of Akasaka was built in 1909 to serve as a residential residence for the Prince Consort. Built in a neo-baroque style, the palace makes many references to European art, particularly French and Italian. Several painters from these two countries have decorated rooms in the palace, which has now become the residence of foreign presidents or governors invited by the Japanese government. The surrounding park hosts ceremonies and for the last fifteen years or so, it has also been home to the latest architectural audacities of Japanese architects.
