TOYOSU MARKET
Attend the famous tuna auction at Japan's largest wholesale market and taste fresh sushi.
The relocation of the famous Tsukiji market to Toyosu, not far from Odaiba, has been much talked about in recent years, after being delayed several times due to various scandals. It was finally completed in October 2018. Tokyo's new wholesale market is around twice the size of Tsukiji (40.7 hectares). It sells 480 different types of fish and 270 types of fruit and vegetables. It's the biggest market in Tokyo, and indeed in Japan. The complex comprises three different buildings: the auction, wholesale and produce buildings. On the rooftops, a huge garden offers a beautiful view of Tokyo Bay.
The atmosphere at Toyosu is colder and more aseptic than at Tsukiji, especially when it comes to the main attraction: the tuna auction. This takes place from 5.30am to 7am. It's still possible to attend, but only from the glassed-in rooms above, or, by reservation, from a room where you're closer to the overheated atmosphere of the auction. It's all easily accessible, very impressive and, of course, you can sample delicious sushi in the three restaurant areas. If you're only interested in the latter, however, it's best to head to Tsukiji, where some of the shops have retained a stall. You'll be able to sample ultra-fresh fish in a more popular setting, already steeped in history.
