The museum has an impressive collection of 1800 nihon-ga. The term refers to paintings made since the Meiji era by Japanese artists who attempt to update traditional Japanese techniques and materials, as opposed to yō-ga, the Western style introduced in the 19th century. Very nice exhibitions are organized six times a year, through which we discover artists whose names are relatively unknown outside Japan, such as Yokoyama Taikan, Kobayashi Kokei or Uemura Shōen.
