This beautiful botanical garden where rare species are preserved was part of the residence of the shōgun Tsunayoshi Tokugawa (1646-1709) who was assassinated by his wife. A hospital for the poor was built here during the Edo period to treat the poor with the shōgun's plants that grew in the botanical garden. In the northwestern part of the garden, a Meiji colonial style wooden building with delicate architecture still stands.
