This garden was founded by the Mito branch of the Tokugawa family in 1629. Like its name, it is inspired by Confucian thought and Chinese style, unlike Tokyo's other flagship garden, Rikugi-en. This promenade garden reproduces natural landscapes around an artificial lake, hills and bridges. Built in the early Edo period, it is said to have influenced other gardens. Designated a special historic site in 1952, it is renowned for the beauty of its panoramas.
