This beautiful, traditional park of almost 13 hectares is what's known as a kaiyū, i.e. a promenade garden "of a thousand pleasures" from the Edo period. It dates back to the 17th century and was designed by Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa, then restored by the founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu, Yatarō Iwasaki. Rikugi-en means "garden of the 6 elements", in reference to the principles of waka, traditional poetry. It is one of the last three Edo-period seigniorial parks still in existence in Tokyo, along with Hama-rikyū and Koishikawa Garden.
