A little bit on the edge of Shinjuku, but still in the district, is the pretty hill of Kagurazaka, nowadays considered as the "French" district because the former high school and the French institute were located there. The atmosphere is very relaxed and there are nice souvenir stores. In the Edo period, Kagurazaka was located right next to the moat of the Edo castle, and a pleasure district had developed there. Some geishas can still be seen in the picturesque alleys where ryotei, Japanese restaurants, are nestled.
