Not far from the great Buddha of Kamakura, this luminous temple of the Jodo sect overlooks the ocean. Founded around the 11thcentury , it is famous for the eleven-headed wooden statue of Kannon housed in the main pavilion. The entrance is at the foot of Mount Kamakura. On the way up, you can see rows of jizō, considered the protector of deceased children. Near the main pavilion, a grotto is dedicated to the Benzaiten goddess of femininity and beauty. The temple is the4th stop on the 33-temple pilgrimage.
