The town of Odawara developed historically around the castle. Today it remains the dungeon, which is located in the heart of a public garden. It contains documents on the history of the town. Hojo-sōun (1432-1519), a member of the Hojo clan, one of the most powerful of the Civil War period, attacked the castle built shortly before, in 1494, and settled there. In 1578, Hōjō Ujimasa, refusing to submit to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was attacked in Odawara and committed suicide. The castle was later owned by the Okubo, then by the Abe and Inaba.
