HAKONE JINJA
The torii of the Hakone shrine has its feet in the Ashi lake, the only sign visible from afar, as it is otherwise hidden under the trees. It would have been founded in 757 by Mangan. According to the legend, Mangan established the shrine after defeating the nine-headed dragon that was causing panic around the lake. Once appeased, the dragon became the god Kuzuryuu, protector of the lake and its inhabitants, and today worshipped on the spot. Every year, a festival is held in August to appease the dragon. The celebrations culminate in a fireworks display.
