HAKONE JINJA
The torii at Hakone Shrine has its feet in Lake Ashi, the only sign visible from afar, as it is otherwise hidden under trees. It is said to have been founded in 757 by Mangan. According to legend, Mangan established the shrine after defeating the nine-headed dragon that was spreading panic around the lake. Once appeased, the dragon became the god Kuzuryuu, protector of the lake and its inhabitants. Today, he is revered locally. Every August, a festival is held to appease the dragon. The celebrations culminate in a fireworks display.
