The No, Japan's oldest theatre, is honoured at the Takigi Noh festival, where the troupes play in the open air.
Noh is one of Japan's oldest theatrical forms. Gestures and speech are extremely ritualized. It deals with historical or legendary themes and is still practiced today. The Takigi Noh festival, which takes place every year at the Heian Jingu in Kyoto, is an excellent opportunity to discover this art. The two schools of Noh play the classical texts of the genre in the open air, sometimes at night by torchlight. Understanding Japanese is not necessary and explanations in English are available.
