This festival, the most famous in Japan, takes place in Kyoto during the whole month. The atmosphere is unbridled and unique.
It is the most famous festival in Japan. It dates back to the year 869 and is said to have been held without interruption since then (except during the coronavirus pandemic). The objective was originally to appease the gods during an epidemic. It takes place throughout the month of July and imbues the city with a unique atmosphere. The two most important events are the float processions on July 17 and 24, preceded by several evenings of festivities during which traffic is stopped in the crowded streets of downtown.
