YOSHIDA JINJA
For Setsubun, demons are hunted and last year's amulets are burned. The year is off to a good start.
At the foot of Higashiyama Mountains, this beautiful shrine was founded in 859 in the Heian era. In the 15th century, the priest Yoshida Kanetomo established a powerful branch of Shinto called Yoshida Shinto. The shrine remains influential today. It was here that the rites of inauguration of the nearby Kyoto University were performed. The shrine is also known for the Setsubun, on the eve of the first day of spring. A festival takes place during which the god of all evils is expelled to start the lunar new year.
