This shrine on the south bank of the Kamo River is said to have existed for at least 2000 years and is dedicated to the founding deity of the city of Kyoto. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sanctuary reached its heyday in the 9th century, when Shinto architectural traditions were founded and reflected in the buildings. Reputed to protect Kyoto's inhabitants and visitors, the shrine is a must for a visit to Kyoto, especially since many activities and festivals take place there.
