KAMIGAMO-JINJA
This shrine in the north of Kyoto is the oldest in the city. Its architectural style corresponds to that of the 11th century but it was rebuilt in 1628. It is especially known for its festivals, including the Aoi Matsuri, one of the three great matsuri of Kyoto. In the stone garden of the shrine, there are two white sand cones topped with a leaf that brings purity, and supposed to represent the sacred mountain Kami-yama which lies behind the shrine. Legend has it that the goddess of the shrine came down from heaven to rule over the mountain.
