Important place of worship in the west of Kyoto, it dates back to 701 and was founded by the Hata family. It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. It is dedicated to the divinity of water. Moreover, the spring water gushing from one of the statues is reputed to be one of the purest in the country. Large barrels of sake can be seen being offered to the kami. The Shintō statues that once belonged to this shrine are on display in the Kyoto National Museum.
