Founded in 1341 by Takauji Ashikaga, the temple became the burial temple of the Ashikaga Shōgun family. Originally the garden was designed by Soseki Musō. It was rebuilt in 1818 and a room contained the statues of the. During the Meiji Restoration, as the Ashikaga had the bad reputation of historically opposing the emperor Go-Daigo, the crowd threw the statues into the Kamogawa River.
