GARDEN SHŌSEI-EN
A charming Japanese garden only 12 minutes walk from Kyoto station. Nestled in a small street, it is easy to miss it; however, it is really worth a visit. It includes several tea buildings and pavilions as well as a large pond dotted with islands and bridges. Less frequented by tourists than the other parks and gardens in the city, it is a true haven of peace. Ishikawa Jozan (1583-1672), a renowned Confucian scholar, calligrapher and poet, created the site as a private garden and place of reflection for the priest of the nearby Higashi Honganji Temple, of which this garden has been an annex since 1641. It is also called "Kikokutei", after a particular type of orange that grew there at that time.
