Popular religious ceremony organized on the beaches of Montevideo to pay homage to the goddess of the Sea, Iemanjá.

The Afro-Brazilian religion Umbanda worships Lemanja, the goddess of the ocean, in an annual ceremony celebrated at Playa Ramírez in Montevideo. During the celebration, worshippers make offerings to the sea and converse with it while drinking to facilitate communication. This celebration is very impressive, as it illuminates the beach with thousands of candles that surround small boats loaded with fruits, jewels and flowers that are then launched into the sea as a sign of gratitude and to ask for the protection of the goddess.
