At the top of Cerro de Montevideo is a fortress that was built under the orders of Governor Francisco Javier de Elío in 1808 to protect the city from possible invasions. This fortress houses the Military Museum, which contains an important collection of weapons, documents, uniforms and works of art related to José Gervasio Artigas. It will be of interest mainly to history buffs, but it is worthwhile if you decide to take a walk to the top of the hill.
