The most famous soccer stadium in the country was inaugurated in July 1930 for the first World Cup in history. It was in this famous arena located in the José Battle y Ordoñez Park that the 60,000 spectators of the final saw La Celeste (the name given to the Uruguayan team) beat the Argentinean rival 4 goals to 2. During your trip, the Uruguayans will proudly remind you of this victory. This stadium, named in honor of the centennial of the country's independence, was later declared a historic monument of world soccer by FIFA. It still hosts today the national team's matches, as well as major cultural events.
Inaugurated on December 15, 1975, the soccer museum houses an extensive collection of memorabilia including photos, archival documents, paintings, trophies and jerseys (including those of Maradona and Pele). The major tournaments in the history of Uruguayan soccer and its best players are also detailed. Visitors will be able to visit some of the stadium's rooms, such as the locker rooms, the press room, the stands and, of course, the legendary pitch. They can also climb the iconic Torre de los Homenajes (Tower of Tributes) for an additional $100. Temporary exhibitions, a projection room, and a souvenir store for all football fans are also available to visitors.
