MUSEO Y JARDÍN BOTÁNICO PROF. ATILIO LOMBARDO
Explore the splendid Botanical Garden, founded in 1902 thanks to the initiative of the Strasbourg aristocrat Joseph de Buschental (1802-1870) who had trees planted and exotic birds brought from all five continents to this 60-hectare estate. Designed by the French landscape architect Charles Racine, this garden is a true gem of the region, offering a breathtaking collection of beauty and diversity with over 500,000 plant species. Admire the harmony between the European species arranged in the French style, and the tropical and subtropical species allowed by the local climate. Within the park you will find a variety of trees such as chestnut, oak, ash, poplar, ceibo (the national tree) and jacaranda, as well as various species of pine and eucalyptus. Well-maintained and well-signed, the garden also houses a charming little museum, a research center, greenhouses and fountains. A short walk away is another neighborhood gem, El Rosedal, a rose garden established in 1912 with 12,000 roses imported from France. Let yourself be seduced by the four 60-meter high pergolas and the eight Art Nouveau style domes, designed once again by the expertise of Charles Racine. The Botanical Garden offers several educational workshops on the flora of Uruguay as well as yoga classes (registration on the website). An excellent place to relax, recharge and enjoy nature in the heart of the city.
