PLAZA ZABALA
Located in the heart of the Ciudad Vieja, the square was built in 1890 and owes its name to Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, Spanish colonizers and founder of the city in 1726. In its centre, the statue of Spanish, Lorenzo Coullant Varela, is dedicated to Zabala. It shows the family crest and the date of the founding of Montevideo. As for the Parisian style gardens, they are the work of French landscape architect Eduardo André. To the north of the square is Palacio Ponzi, which houses the Arts Deco museum and Casa de Saenz-Zumarán (converted into bank).
