PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN (MATRIZ)
Obligatory starting point of all visits to the old city, Plaza Matriz is an unavoidable symbol and an emblematic element of the city of Montevideo. Formerly the main square of the colonial era, it has been the scene of many historical events for the country. For example, it was here that the first constitution was sworn in in 1930 (for this reason, Plaza Matriz is also called Plaza de la Constitución). In its center, it contains small gardens and four diagonal paths leading to the marble fountain by Italian sculptor Juan Ferrari. The fountain is decorated with various mythical figures, symbols of Freemasonry and inscriptions commemorating the main historical events of the country. It was built in 1871 to commemorate the inauguration of running water services in Montevideo. Also worth mentioning are two white stone buildings, the majestic Club Uruguay and the headquarters of the Partido Nacional, the work of Italian engineer Luigi Andreoni. Although both buildings are privately owned, it is usually enough to knock on the door, introduce yourself and try your luck to visit them: the friendliness of Uruguayans will undoubtedly work. A real meeting place for Montevideanos, the Plaza hosts several cultural events such as concerts, demonstrations and festivals. Don't miss the antique fair that is held there every Saturday morning.
