EL ÁGUILA
Perched on the edge of the ocean, a few kilometers from the city, is El Aguila, a mysterious mansion in the shape of an eagle's head, built in 1945 by the Uruguayan engineer Juan Torres. It belonged to the Italian businessman Natalio Michelizzi, who used it as a meeting place to enjoy the breathtaking view and to get together with his friends. The unusual building contains a living room, whose windows are the eyes of the eagle, a small bathroom, a kitchen and a bedroom, but unfortunately, since the death of its owner, these rooms are no longer accessible to visitors. Although its real name is La Quimera, today it is better known as El Aguila de Atlantida (the Eagle of Atlantida) or El Nido del Aguila (the Eagle's Nest). Many legends and enigmatic rumors surround this structure because of its singular appearance, giving it an atmosphere of mystery. Some claim that it was a smugglers' den, others that it housed some Nazis during World War II, while others attest that it was in fact a chapel dedicated to the Virgin. What is the true history of this strange house? No one really knows... But one thing is for sure, a walk to El Aguila at sunset is a breathtaking experience that will leave you with indelible memories. You can get there by kilometer 43 of the Interbalnearia road, or by the Paseo Cultural del Águila.
