PLAZA SAN FERNANDO

Rich in cultural events, this square has in the center a statue of the father of the country, José Artigas, and a fountain. Opposite it is the cathedral of the same name, inaugurated in 1895, whose altar houses the image of the Virgen del Carmen, protector of sailors. Further on, on Calle 25 de Mayo, you will find the mural La Diligence, painted in 1957 by the Uruguayan painter Castells Capurro. This mural represents the famous stagecoach nicknamed "La comercial del Este" that used to travel between Montevideo and Maldonado at the end of the ^19th century.
