In 1896, Don Antonio Lussich, a self-taught Uruguayan, poet and sailor, bought 1,800 hectares in Punta Ballena and introduced plant species from five continents. In 1979, the Intendencia de Maldonado acquired 182 hectares, and another 192 in 1990, to create an arboretum open to the public. Today it is an important forest reserve (the most important in South America according to some). There are nearly 400 exotic species and 60 indigenous species. There is also a museum about the life of Lussich.
