It is the oldest church in the country since its construction began in 1695. It was then rebuilt from 1800 according to the plans of the Spanish architect Tomás Toribio. It contains a 16th century altarpiece. The history of the city is engraved in the walls of this building, whose exterior is very simple, bare, unlike what can be seen in Buenos Aires for example. Charles Darwin mentions this church in his diary of the HMS Beagle.
