The current appearance of the Plaza Manuel de Lobo, named in honor of the city's founder, dates from 1911, but it was on this former Plaza de Armas that the fortress San Gabriel, the main church and the Casa de los Gobernadores, built by the Portuguese between 1731 and destroyed by the Spanish in the late 18th century, once stood. The ruins of these buildings still stand in the center of the plaza, along with elements of Spanish and Creole architecture.

Petite place centrale arborée ou on trouve au centre des ruines d'une ancienne forteresse. L’église iglesa matriz se trouve sur cette place.
