It was here that Giuseppe Garibaldi, then a sailor on the side of the Colorados, established his camp in 1845 when Carmelo was the center of operations of the Guerra Grande, the civil war that pitted the Colorados led by Fructuoso Rivera against the Blancos of Manuel Oribe between 1839 and 1851, after the independence of the country. Born in 1807 in Nice (French Empire) and died in 1882 in Caprera (Kingdom of Italy), Garibaldi was an Italian general considered one of the fathers of the Italian fatherland.
