Over theLas Vacas arroyo, this "swing" bridge imported from Germany and inaugurated on May1, 1912 allows large ships to pass. It was the first of its kind in Uruguay and one of the few to be operated manually by human beings. After its construction, the bridge became so famous among the Carmelitanos that they nicknamed it " la obra " (the work). A sign on the bridge announces that those who cross it will always have the chance to return to Carmelo. Since then, several bridges of this type have been built in Uruguay.
