In 1833, during his famous trip to America, the British scientist Charles Darwin conducted research in botany, geology and paleontology for a period of six months in the Nueva Palmira region. This research was used to develop his theory of evolution. To commemorate his visit, a stele and a spiral staircase of 120 steps (15 m) were erected. The staircase, called "Escalera de Darwin", allows to observe the different geological layers studied by the famous naturalist.
