The museum, which was once owned by the Baron of Mauá in the 19th century, is commonly known as the "Mauá Castle". It houses one of the richest paleontological collections in the country, thanks to the initiative of paleontologist Alejandro Berro. It has almost 4,000 pieces, mainly from Soriano and the Negro River, of which only a few are presented to the public. The most notable pieces include the Gliptodon skeleton and dinosaur eggs.
