The city, even if its architecture is not as interesting as in Colonia, is still worth a look. In the center of the city, the Plaza Independencia has been home to a monument to the gaucho de Asencio since 1942, a work by Juan Zorrilla de San Martín. Opposite, the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, erected in 1868, is worth a visit for its architectural style and the artistic works it contains. The plaza is famous for its beautiful fountain, its green spaces and for being a meeting and relaxation place for the city's inhabitants.
