MUSEO LUIS ALBERTO SOLARI
Museum and exhibition of plastic arts of great Uruguayan artists, including an important retrospective of the works of the painter Luis Alberto Solari, of Lithuanian origin, but arrived in Uruguay at a young age. The museum was inaugurated on August 17, 1989 in honor of this famous painter who lived in Fray Bentos and whose fame is international. The building dates back to 1879 and originally housed the Sociedad Cosmopolita de Socorros Mutuos, which aimed to provide assistance to migrants. It was later used as a cinema, the Cine Doré, where silent films were shown, but accompanied by the orchestra of Serafín D'Agosto. In the mid-twentieth century, the place was used for social events and parties organized by the society La Armonía y la Juventud Unida. Later, until 1987, Radio Rincón occupied the place. Finally, thanks to the initiative of Dr. Mario Carminatti, the municipality bought the building and converted it into a museum. Today, the main room has a permanent exhibition of the painter's paintings, and the visit continues in two other side rooms dedicated to different national and foreign artists. In addition, the museum offers guided tours and a video exhibition featuring interviews with Solari. Finally, three rooms have been set up to host traveling exhibitions. The annual program foresees that these rooms will be used twice a month.
