MUSEO LA GUAYREÑA
This house has housed an emblematic figure of Patria Vieja, a woman commonly called «Paisana Oriental» or «La Guayreña». The latter, which was actually called Cayetana María Leguizamón, was born in Montevideo in 1770 and married Vicente Báez, a man from the Guayrá region (Paraguay); This is why it was called "La Guayreña". His husband was the craftsman of a victory over the troops of Bartolomé Mena. His wife symbolizes the archetype of the oriental peasant farmer, who is working, proud and dedicated to a great cause.
She died in 1852. This museum pays tribute to him, and through her pays tribute to all the women of the time who had to manage the home, care for children, work in the fields… The place was first inaugurated in 1983 and then re-opened in 2008. Outside you can see a plaque of the local poet Pedro Montero López Durazno dedicated to this historic character. Inside, two rooms contain reproductions of documents pertaining to the life of the Guayreña, as well as the living conditions of the woman at the time. Also various objects and ustensils, tools, furniture…
