TEATRO LAVALLEJA
Not far from the Plaza Libertad is the Lavalleja Theater, the city's main artistic stage. Inaugurated in 1909, it was renovated a second time in 1989 after having been abandoned. Originally, its architecture was supposed to be reminiscent of the Belle Epoque, although the initial project, the work of the Catalan Cayetano Buigas y Moravá, was modified for budgetary reasons. The structure of the boxes resembles the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona or the Colón in Buenos Aires. The theater has 500 seats. Its austere pediment and aesthetic reddish facade are particularly noteworthy.
