Dating back to 1523, the convent was built by Dominican brothers before serving as a refuge for Spanish soldiers against attacks by Taino Indians. The calm income, the brothers recover it. But after the war against Spain in 1898, the US army installed its headquarters there. The small chapel is now a museum. Cultural activities are sometimes held in the patio.
