The Gothic ceiling from the first half of the 16th century is a beautiful illustration of medieval architecture in the Caribbean. Construction of the cathedral began in 1521, but a hurricane swept away the entire building 4 years later. It was rebuilt in 1540 before being hit again by severe weather in 1615. Most of its current face dates from the works of 1917. It houses the remains of the first governor of the island, Juan Ponce de León. Masses are regularly celebrated here. Spectacular weddings too.
