Fort San Cristóbal is located on the northeast point of the old city walls. Its construction began in 1634 and took a century and a half to complete. The Spaniards decided to build it to reinforce the mission of El Morro, namely, to overcome the military assaults of the other great European powers. Ironically, two Irish architects designed the plans for the structure. Don't miss the devil's watchtower. Legend has it that prisoners thrown from the place were devoured by demons.
