Inaugurated on October 12, 1992, this square celebrates the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. In the center, the great totem (El Tótem Tellúrico), made of granite and ceramic symbols, reaches 12 meters. It symbolizes the European roots of the history of the American continent. The plaza is located right in front of the most impressive site in old San Juan, the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. It is often a meeting place for guided tours of the city.
