Built in 1606 by Dominican monks, the church has long served as a place of worship and a convent. It is the second oldest church in Puerto Rico, after the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista (1521). But today, since its restoration in 1960, it houses a museum where many works of religious art(santos - saints, sculptures, paintings) are exhibited. This museum, which is more than 400 years old, is now managed by the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico.
