Marathon Mountain overlooks Seward and offers an extraordinary view of the surrounding area. At an altitude of 1,000 meters, it is the scene of an exceptional gathering of enthusiasts who engage in the most famous foot race in Alaska. Every 4th of July, the national holiday, about 300 competitors leave from the center of town to reach the top of the mountain located 1.5 miles from the start and then return. The slope is so steep and rocky, that during the descents, many competitors fall and cross the finish line bloody.
