BARANOV MUSEUM
This building was declared a national heritage site in 1962 and houses many Russian items.
The house that houses the museum is the oldest Russian building in Alaska. It was built in 1806 by Alexander Baranov as a fur warehouse. In 1911, it was bought by W.J. Erskine who transformed the place into a home. In 1962 the building was declared a national heritage. You will find many Russian items here. Make a detour to the store if you decide to bring back a beautiful samovar... But one comes especially to learn more about the slavery of the Inuit population, the fur trade and the Americanization of the island.
