ST. MICHAEL'S CATHEDRAL
Russian Orthodox Church in Sitka where relics and icons were preserved during a fire.
This Russian Orthodox church, built between 1844 and 1848, was the oldest Russian building in Alaska before a fire destroyed it entirely in 1966. Relics and icons were fortunately saved and can still be admired today as the inhabitants hastened to rebuild the church on the same model as the old one. What's more, this cathedral was the first Orthodox cathedral established in North America in 1848. Russian trappers, hunters, explorers and missionaries brought this religion to Alaska.
