CASTLE HILL
Important historic site in Sitka listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Castle Hill, a small grassy embankment, was originally a bastion for the Kiksadi before other Russian buildings were erected in its place. The latest was Baranof's Castle, built in 1837, which was destroyed by fire in 1898. It is an important historic site. It was here that Russia ceded the site to the United States on October 18, 1867. Every year, Alaska Day is always celebrated on October 18. This historic site is managed by the Alaska State Parks and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
