MOUNT EDGECUMBE
Sleeping volcano with its snow-covered cone on Baranof Island with a difficult 10.7 km climb.
Mount Edgecumbe is a dormant volcano and its snow-covered cone is the highest point (976 m) of the island of Kruzof which faces the municipality of Sitka, located on Baranof Island. It can be climbed on a difficult 10.7 km climb (one way only) with some muddy and very steep sections. The volcano was the subject of a joke on April 1, 1974, when a local prankster faked its eruption after setting fire to a hundred used tires in the crater ... A misplaced joke certainly, but one that made a great impression!
